We want to hear from you about DEI priorities and actions in Peterborough!

As you were aware from the last Diversity Equity and Inclusion Network meeting, we had hoped to be ready for a June Council report but unfortunately COVID changed some of our initial plans. We are now planning for a fall report to Council. We have followed up with the Anti-Racism Action Program Application but there is no decision yet.

They did indicate that the program is oversubscribed and there may be a delay in decisions.

In the meantime, we would like to hear from you about the DEI priorities and actions in Peterborough. So much has changed, since the grant application was completed in 2019 that it is important to check in now about the work already going on and the the priorities to come. We also need to be mindful of the activities that we will be able to deliver given the status of COVID.

Members of the DEI Network and other related agencies are encouraged to complete the survey by August 4th and are also encouraged to participate in the other online engagement tools as appropriate. There are spaces to leave us your ideas and to post any questions that you would like us to answer.

We hope you enjoy this new platform for online engagement. We will report back on the information gathered to those who follow this page. We will also use the online engagement as a starting point for online focus groups to be held on Wednesday August 5th from 10 am to noon or Thursday August 11th from 1 - 3pm. Please contact Nancy Fischer nfischer@peterborough.ca (705-748-8830 x3814) if you would like to attend the focus group and dive deeper into the future priorities and actions related to diversity, equity and inclusion at the City.

In case you missed the background, the City of Peterborough joined the Coalition for Inclusive Municipalities on December 10, 2019. Council requested that staff pursue funding to action the 10 Common Commitments related to the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities and to provide a status update to include any new priorities and proposed actions and timelines. The Council Report and the Summary of Information from the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities is available in the document library (lower right).

On December 2020, the City, in partnership with 10 community agencies, applied for an Anti-Racism Action Program Grant from Canadian Heritage. We anticipate that we will hear about the results in the late summer 2020. This grant would support a number of community programs and events over the next year and a Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer at the City to develop a plan and policy review.

In the meantime, the City is planning on continuing to move forward with some diversity, equity and inclusion work, within existing resources. The City has always pursued some work in this area but is seeking advice from the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Network to help identify priorities and specific activities that may be able to be supported by the Network or other community agencies.

Thanks for participating!

Do you have an idea for actions that the City and community partners could take to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in Peterborough within existing resources?

Do you have an idea for action? It needs to be low cost and doable within existing resources. There are probably lots of small steps we could take to more forward.
