Debrief/lessons learned

The Built Environment Working Group was established as a sub-group of the City’s Emergency Control Group.

The objective of this debrief is to gather relevant information from Working Group members to assist with planning for other potential temporary, short-term changes to the built environment in the future.

Focus area for debrief: Downtown public space (e.g. streets and sidewalks) layout modifications.

Purpose/Objective of downtown public space layout modifications

With the re-opening of businesses under the Provincial Government’s framework for the re-opening of the Province, the working group was tasked with reviewing and modifying the layout of streets, pedestrian space and other public space in the Central Area to support community/personal health/safety aligning with Provincial Orders and public health guidance.

Guiding Principles

The Working Group established the following Guiding Principles.

Overarching Guiding Principle

Personal and community safety must remain the top priority.

Secondary Principles

  • Ensuring movement of all modes of travel within the downtown can be done so safely, including pedestrians, cyclists, construction traffic, parking-related traffic, and vehicles.

  • Supporting businesses to re-open in a safe, consistent manner.

  • Equitable access.
