What’s Happening:

The City of Peterborough is undertaking a signalized intersection improvement project on Lansdowne Street West at the intersections of Park Street, Aylmer Street, and George Street. This project will refresh this portion of Lansdowne Street, and is being developed to improve vehicular, pedestrian, and cycling accessibility and safety.

The general goals of this project are to:

  • Improve traffic flow, vehicle safety, and driveway access from George Street to Park Street;
  • Improve the safety and functionality of intersections along Lansdowne Street at Park Street, Aylmer Street, and George Street;
  • Implement a signalized intersection at Lansdowne Street and Aylmer Street to improve safety of this intersection and to provide signalized access to the New Arena and Aquatics Complex;
  • Improve pedestrian and cyclist access by providing an off-street multi-use trail on the south side of Lansdowne Street from Park Street to Lock Street; and,
  • Improve pedestrian safety on Lansdowne Street by providing a boulevard between the roadway and the sidewalk on the north side of the street.

Phasing:

This project is planned to be constructed in phases, with the anticipated phasing as follows:

  • Phase 1 (2023): Utility relocations and roadworks on Lansdowne Street from east of the Park Street intersection to west of the George Street intersection. This phase will include implementation of the signalized intersection at Lansdowne Street and Aylmer Street.
    • Phase 1 Construction Phasing - maintain one lane in each direction with centre turning lane during construction activities.
  • Phase 2 (2024): Utility relocations within the remainder of the project limits and property acquisitions.
  • Phase 3 (2025): Completion of the remainder of roadworks within the project limits including intersection works at Lansdowne Street and George Street, and Lansdowne Street and Park Street.
  • Phase 4 - Lock Street to Otonabee River Bridge (Timeline to be determined): Future Project

Please note that the phasing details outlined above are only estimates, pending budget approvals and could be subject to change.
