Marginalized and Disengaged Artists and Cultural Workers Listening Session

This session brings together practicing artists, independent creatives, arts administrators, producers, and cultural workers to explore the realities of creating, sustaining, and presenting work in Peterborough. The discussion will focus on professional pathways, space and infrastructure needs, funding access, collaboration opportunities, barriers to sustainability, and what a supportive creative ecosystem should look like over the next 10 years. This session centres working artists as key contributors to the cultural system.

This session creates space for newcomer, immigrant, and racialized residents to share how they experience culture, belonging, and creative expression in Peterborough. The conversation will explore cultural visibility, access to opportunities, barriers to participation, intergenerational cultural continuity, and what inclusion and representation should look like in the city’s cultural future. The goal is to ensure the Cultural Plan reflects diverse lived realities and supports equitable participation and leadership.

This session convenes leaders from the business community, cultural organizations, BIAs, tourism, and creative entrepreneurs to explore the intersection of culture and economic vitality. The discussion will examine how arts and culture contribute to downtown vibrancy, talent attraction, visitor experience, placemaking, and local business resilience. It will also identify partnership opportunities and structural supports needed to strengthen Peterborough’s creative economy.

This session explores the role of arts and culture in supporting community wellbeing, social connection, aging populations, and mental health. Participants may include seniors’ organizations, health partners, community service providers, recreation leaders, and artists working in community-engaged or therapeutic contexts. The conversation will identify how creative practice contributes to inclusion, social cohesion, and quality of life and how these contributions can be strengthened through municipal policy and partnerships.
