Questions and Comment Form
Introduction
The City of Peterborough is creating a conceptual design for Charlotte Street West between Park Street North and Aylmer Street North. This project will transform the corridor into a safer, more inviting, and accessible space that better supports walking, cycling, transit, and public life in the downtown. The project is guided by the following vision statement: “Charlotte Street West will create a gateway destination to the downtown core that is safe, vibrant, and inviting. It will contribute to the corridor’s environmental resilience and sustainability, promote economic development, and enhance the user experience for all ages and abilities now and into the future.”
Work on this project began in Summer 2024 and focused on background research, community and stakeholder engagement, and development of a proposed streetscape concept. The proposed direction includes features that enhance safety, expand greenery, improve accessibility, and create a more vibrant and connected streetscape —supporting the City’s broader goals for livability, sustainability, and inclusive public spaces such as those outlined in the Official Plan (2024) and Transportation Master Plan (2024). In particular, the Draft Proposed Concept includes the following key features:
- Dedicated pedestrian clearways with consistent use of pavement treatments and delineation buffers
- Raised, continuous one-way cycle tracks for improved safety, maintenance, and aesthetics
- Integrated bus stops with shelters, seating, and wayfinding signage
- Strategic on-street parking with seasonal patio opportunities
- Traffic and vehicle turn movements maintained through corridor
- Landscaping and street furniture throughout corridor, including trees with soil cells to maximize streetscape space
- Opportunity for Low-Impact Development (LID) for stormwater management
The Draft Proposed Concept can be found under the Documents section of this page, and is linked here: Draft Proposed Concept.
