At present, the Peterborough Public Library does not have an emergency backup power system to provide electricity during outages. A backup power system would enable the library to act as an emergency respite centre for residents during community power disruptions.
A natural gas generator would be used to provide continous emergency power. Its downsides are that it creates harmful localized air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the generator would create noise while operating and would need to be tested monthly.
Alternatively, a solar panel system coupled with batteries as an emergency power system would not produce greenhouse gas emissions. A solar panel system's upside is that it can lower the amount of purchased grid electricity during daytime library operating hours, reducing annual utility costs. However, battery operational time would be limited due to diminished solar electrical output during shorter length of daylight hours in late-fall and early-winter.
