What is the project focus?

A planned rehabilitation project for the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre will enhance accessibility features and improve the safety for customers and employees, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project will include repairing and replacing the centre’s aging Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment, replacing aging infrastructure within the changeroom spaces, replacing plumbing infrastructure, improving accessibility, and replacing the reception desk to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and COVID-19 standards. One of the considerations is whether to redesign the layout of the main changeroom spaces, such as replacing the gender-specific group/communal changerooms with individual, private changerooms.

A concept design for the changeroom renovations on the option to create individual, private changerooms has been posted to the Documents section of this project page for you to review.

A video of a presentation by the design team on one of the potential changeroom layouts is available under the video section on the right side of the project page. You can also read the helpful FAQ and "did you know posts".

  • Gender-specific group changerooms?

    Individual, private changerooms?

    Have your say.

The Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre is planning to replace its specialized Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, replace deficient plumbing infrastructure, and review the design of changeroom spaces to improve overall accessibility for users.

Among the considerations is the potential redesign of the three main changeroom spaces to replace gender-specific group changeroom spaces with private, individual changerooms. The individual changeroom design allows more focus on privacy, accessibility, gender-inclusivity, safety, and cleaning process enhancement and ability to shut down a few changerooms at a time for cleaning rather than a full large gender-specific changeroom.

For these reasons, the first round of consultation assumed the individual changeroom design and did not offer the choice. However, during the earlier round of consultation on the design, feedback received highlighted the socialization aspect, feeling of safety, and comfort with current layout of the segregated male, female, and universal/family change space. Additionally, there were comments requesting further consultation.

Our project page at www.connectptbo.ca/pswcreno includes information on the overall project, a frequency asked question section, videos, consultation results, demographics, and other project related information. If you are unable to access our online resource, this information can be requested by calling our project hotline, 705-742-0050 ext. 2202, visiting the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre during operational hours, or via email at sportandwellnesscentre@peterborough.ca.

A recommended design, informed by the input through the consultation process, operational needs and project costing will go to City Council for its consideration. Please note that the feedback received from the first consultations will be considered for the proposed design such as retaining a viewing area, inclusion of full-size, half-size and double-wide lockers, child-minding programs, and sauna facilities.

The following survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and is open until 9 p.m. on April 22, 2021.
