The City engages with residents to gather ideas and feedback as it drafts the budget each year for City Council’s consideration.

The City consults with the community throughout the budget process – at the beginning when setting the guidelines for the drafting of the budget, when the draft budget is released, and before Council considers approving the budget.

Each year, Council considers the needs of the community, expected service levels, and legislated responsibilities as it sets the operating and capital budgets for the City of Peterborough.

As part of the community engagement, Council typically holds casual drop-in-style meetings in each of the five wards of the City to give residents an opportunity to talk to Council members and City staff about the City's budget process ahead of setting the guidelines for drafting the next year's budget. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the drop-in meetings are being held online and by phone.

You'll find dates and information on how to participate in the Key Dates section on the right side of the project page as well as in the Updates section below.

The Draft 2023 Budget documents are expected to be posted publicly and presented to Council in December 2022.

We'll continue to update this project page throughout the 2023 Budget process. Check back for updates and details on other opportunities to engage throughout the budget process.

  • This survey is now closed. We will be producing a "What We Heard" report on the results from the survey as well as the in-person consultation that will be posted for the community and provided for Council's consideration as part of the 2022 Budget process.

Thank you for contributing to the creation of the draft 2023 Budget.

The process to create the budget for next year starts early in the current year with community engagement and estimating pressures and opportunities that may affect the budget for the following year. Each year, Council considers the needs of the community, expected service levels, and legislated responsibilities as it sets the operating and capital budgets for the City of Peterborough.

Community input and a financial forecast is provided to City Council before it gives direction on preparing the draft budget. The budget guideline recommendation will be presented to Council in June 2022 and the draft 2023 Budget is planned to be posted for public review in December, with Council approval expected in early 2023.

This survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. Your responses will be provided to City Council ahead of its deliberations on the 2023 Budget guidelines. A summary of the responses will also be publicly posted on the 2023 Budget project page on the Connect Peterborough website.

The survey is one of the ways Council hears from the community as part of the budget process. There are also several public meetings throughout the budget process as well as the direct conversations that residents have with City staff and Council members.
