Let's update the accessibility plan!
The City is developing a new five-year road map to help make Peterborough more accessible and welcoming for everyone. The plan will outline priorities to identify, remove and prevent barriers, so everyone can participate in the community.
How can you help?
Let us know what is needed to make Peterborough more accessible. If you are a person with a disability who lives, visits, studies or works in the City of Peterborough, or you care or advocate for someone with a disability, we want to learn about your experiences. Your feedback will help set priorities and clear goals for the next five years of accessibility planning in Peterborough.
Moving in the right direction
Snapshot accessibility planning in Peterborough over the last 10 years:
2012: Focused on compliance with accessibility laws in Ontario.
2013: Thought about accessibility at the start of every process.
2014 to 2015: Moved from “think” about accessibility to “think-research-consult” about accessibility.
2016 to 2017: Used an accessibility lens on everyday business.
2018 to 2022: Fully incorporated an accessibility lens into new and updated policies, strategic plans, programs, services, facilities and infrastructure.
Accommodations
The City recognizes some people may not be able to use various online public engagement features. Contact the project team for an accommodation to access engagement tools such as the map or survey. It's important to receive feedback from people of all abilities to help shape the accessibility plan. We're happy to help.
Thank you for helping us to better understand the experiences of people with disabilities.

Let us know how to make housing more accessible in Peterborough.
Share your experience to help us understand what people with disabilities need. Think about what features you need on the outside, the inside and along the street of the place where you live.
Background
The City is aware of the shortage of accessible housing in Peterborough. It's a challenging problem that requires big picture thinking and planning, starting with the guiding principles of the City's Official Plan. The City is committed to grow as a complete community. A complete community will meet people’s needs for daily living throughout their lifetime by providing convenient access to a mix of jobs, services, housing, food, public service facilities, open space, and transportation choices. A complete community also helps people of all abilities to age in place. This idea board is intended to focus on the housing component of a complete community.
Peterborough needs a full range and mix of housing options, including higher density housing, to meet the needs of all residents throughout their lives. New development and redevelopment should address shifting household structures, provide for affordable and accessible housing units and maximize the number of residential units which are in close proximity to active transportation and transit routes, shops and services, and public service facilities.
Effective universal design and construction can only occur when we truly appreciate how people with disabilities engage the built environment.
The City doesn't typically build housing directly, but we collaborate with developers for affordable housing, are deeply involved in the housing approval process and have an opportunity to provide developers with advice, resources and lists of funding opportunities. Help us increase the accessible housing stock in Peterborough.
